We started out in 2015 as ING’s software development hub – a distinct entity from ING Bank Romania – then steadily expanded our range to include more services and competencies.
Now we provide borderless services with bank-wide capabilities and operate from two locations: Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca.

Our tech capabilities remain the core of our business, with more than 1500 colleagues active in Data Management, Touchpoint Channels & Integration, Core Banking, and Global Products.

What’s a time when you felt especially proud of a work-related success?

My proudest moment was when my team backed me up when I needed the most, without me asking them.

It came as confirmation that my efforts to build a united team paid off. It’s like brushing your teeth, you don’t think of the return every day you do it, but you end up having a nice smile.

Can a regular day fit it all in? Work and personal pursuits?

The option to work from home makes it easy to take care of real-life matters when needed, and I always make sure that my tasks are done at the end of the day.

How did you become a product manager?

After graduating from ING's 3-year International Talent Programme, which took me to different areas in the company, I chose product management. I get to define the product strategy and roadmap, prioritise features, translate customer needs and business goals into technical tasks that my team can build.

And no, I don't just "tell developers what to do", to debunk a myth. We're in it together and everyone contributes from their place of expertise.

What's a challenging situation you've faced in your job and how did you grow from it?

Dealing with incidents or major outbreaks during Asia hours (nighttime in Europe) was overwhelming at first. A few iterations later, confidence and knowledge built up.

It's comforting to know that anything can be sorted out when it comes to “software and machines”, if you're collected enough to work with the moving parts.

What’s something that keeps you engaged in your job?

It’s knowing that I need to make things happen. I get really absorbed into the screen during focused work, and that gets me going.

Can you share a moment on the job when you felt particularly proud?

All my achievements, big or small, add to the person I'm becoming, so I choose to celebrate all of it.

Helping and guiding others is one of the things that brings me joy.

If I were to name something that felt like a win, it would be a project where a colleague and I suggested an implementation approach that got accepted and remains in use to this day.

"Code all day?" Is that people's perception of your job?

From the outside, it can look like sitting in front of a computer for hours on a row, doing repetitive tasks.
Coding is a big part of it, but I also work on presentations, attend meetings, host events. I have fun with my colleagues, and they've also become my friends. Luckily, we have many opportunities to engage with other teams, our community and beyond.

What do you bring to the team and how do you see them?

Besides technical skills, I add empathy, good laughs, and support. ING Hubs Romania is where I've spent most of my professional life and formed long-lasting friendships. How do you keep things in balance? Any word of wisdom for young professionals?

Maintaining a work-life balance is one of the most important skills a professional can acquire, but it can be difficult to put into practice.

Know your values and prioritise what matters to you, set boundaries and stick to them. I am fully engaged in my job, but also fortunate enough to work for a company where to "unplug and disconnect" are not buzzwords, but a celebrated right. And I use it, because spending quality time with my kids and family is essential to me.

It can't all be good – what's a tough moment you've faced in your job?

I would have to say the first Disaster Recovery I've gone through. It ended up being a successful one, but things didn't go as planned from the get-go. We had to failback the entire process.

Just how exciting can data be?

Exciting enough for me to say that I’ve never had a boring day at work. Let me expand on that: we are responsible for a series of products that prevent financial crime in 40 ING countries. There are so many puzzles to solve, a lot of scenarios to explore and plenty of room to innovate.

Let’s get the terminology straight. What does your job entail?

People see it as a tool for good. They’re not wrong, but the Sustainability or CSR approach is a meeting point between the inside of a company (business needs, challenges) and the outside world (society, the environment). For instance, creating an IT educational programme serves the educational system and the adolescents who get to experience a practical approach to engineering. It also serves our company, since the programme contributes to the formation of new generations of engineers that our business needs.
