Martin Woolley is an industry veteran with over 30 years' experience working with computers large, small and ….. getting smaller. He still has a Sinclair ZX81 somewhere.

Martin was a part of the BBC micro:bit team and designed the micro:bit's Bluetooth profile.

When Martin first discovered Bluetooth low energy it struck him as a phenomenally useful and developer-friendly technology and a perfect fit for this age of the Internet of Things. Bluetooth mesh networking will take this to the next level.

Martin is the Bluetooth SIG's Technical Program Manager for the EMEA region and is responsible for informing, educating and supporting developers in the region.

Keynote: Bluetooth Mesh - An Introduction for Developers

Last year alone, Bluetooth was included in over 3 billion new devices.

It is widely regarded as a key enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Bluetooth BR/EDR is renowned for its high quality audio support and enables point to point connections between devices. Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) is universally respected for its ultra-low energy requirements and superb support for use cases involving small amounts of data, such as machine control interfaces and sensors. LE supports point to point connections but also makes possible one to many topologies through its broadcast capability, which forms the basis of the increasingly ubiquitous Bluetooth beacon.

It's hard to find a smartphone or tablet that does not support Bluetooth. It's the wireless communications technology which is in everyone's pockets.

Bluetooth mesh networking was adopted by the Bluetooth SIG in the summer of 2017. This represents an historic milestone in the evolution of Bluetooth. Bluetooth mesh makes possible many to many network topologies, with networks comprising very large numbers of devices communicating with each other using messages. Messages can be relayed between devices so that communication can extend way beyond the direct radio range of a device. Consequently, a mesh network can cover an enormous area such as a whole office block, airport or university campus. It's predicted that Bluetooth mesh networking will be widely adopted in smart commercial buildings, industrial IoT, the smart home, agriculture and numerous other use cases.

Developers attending this session will learn about the fundamental concepts relating to Bluetooth mesh networking, how things work under the hood and take the first step towards being able to exploit this new technology, which represents an amazing opportunity for new products and new revenue streams.
