Topic: Designing fraud detection systems for tomorrow

Along with the explosion of multiple channels enabling payments (mobile, e-commerce) together with the variety of innovative instruments available for a potential fraudster (Dark Net, techniques for DOS attacks) it has never been clearer that the fraud domain has become an industry by its own generating losses ranging from billions to trillions dollars across the world.
Since fraud instruments employ more and more intelligence and are characterized by rapidly changing patterns widely distributed a good fraud detection approach should be able to address those challenges by creating highly adaptive models that can follow the variety of scenarios in addition to better ways of establishing the identity of the transaction initiator via more advanced out-of-band challenge mechanisms (multi factor authentication, fingerprint).
We will present a sample transaction flow along with some fraud examples occurring in payments ecosystem. We move then into the architecture of a generic fraud detection system and we analyze the differences between the Expert Driven Rules in relation to the Data Driven Model. We introduce then the computation of customers profiles based on past behavior and we move towards a dynamic segmentation based on clustering techniques and machine learning. We analyze how the feedback received from the offline investigations can be used to better improve the models generated in the data rules. In the end we direct the lighting spot on big data.
