Senior Manager, Senior Manager Engineering Role Purpose Responsible for facilitating application development and migration into public cloud with potential involvement in all project lifecycle phases. Interaction with a wide variety of teams in order to generate and refine developer-focused resources including cloud solutions architectures, patterns, proof-of-concept implementations, specific standards and broader principles. Provides a cloud solutions architecture foundation and framework to ensure consistent and efficient delivery, removing duplication and enabling autonomous development teams to realise the full benefits of cloud architecture. Working to refactor existing manual processes throughout the cloud application intake process, instead automating and enabling data-driven reporting and compliance enforcement wherever possible. Responsibilities Key responsibilities Provide cloud solutions architecture support and consultancy to development teams Identify and own principles and standards with regards to cloud solutions architecture Produce and promote architectural patterns that inherently satisfy standards and adhere to controls, in effect providing pre-approved solutions to development teams Identify industry trends and ensure that these are reflected in the resources provided to development teams, working with policy and platform owners where necessary to effect change Act as an advocate for the development team, working to understand and mitigate challenges and gaps with regards to all aspects of the intake process Critical deliverables The role is responsible for delivery of the following: Consultation with application development teams to build an understanding of current and future demand, in addition to persistent problems repeatedly faced Derivation of appropriate solutions architectures based upon application development team requirements Implementation of hands-on proof-of-concept architectures in order to verify differing approaches, services and techniques Definition of both high-level and detailed standards as to what 'optimum looks like' with regard to cloud solutions architecture Delivery of process improvement with regard to the cloud application intake process, with a particular focus on automation, both in terms of reporting and enforcement Development of a cloud solutions architecture pattern library, ensuring that application developers can become self-sufficient and that specific problems are only required to be solved once Engagement with all other associated and engaged teams, ensuring that cloud solutions architecture standards, strategies and approaches are correctly aligned across all affected areas Impact This primary focus of this role is to enable the development or migration of applications into public cloud, demonstrating best-practice cloud architecture attributes of efficiency, elasticity, availability, repeatability, observability, security and supportability. Maturity in this space is currently low; both the issues that the role will mitigate and the implementation approach are detailed below: Development teams currently work in silos, with limited opportunity to collaborate The role will provide and promote architectural patterns, demonstrating how to solve common problems and use cloud services, reducing development effort caused by rework and repeated reviews of identical architecture The role will additionally provide a framework to discover such patterns from multiple perspectives (e.g. "how should I build a container-based solution?", "how should I use AWS EKS?" etc) Ensuring adherence to standards is currently a manual review-based process The role will promote best-practice architectural approaches, working with policy owners to design architectural patterns that inherently satisfy standards and adhere to controls, in effect providing pre-approved solutions, and enable the relationships between patterns and standards to be quantified The relationships between the systems of record and the terminology itself (e.g. "control", "standard", "service" etc) with regards to cloud architecture are unclear or undefined The role will work with all appropriate owners and interested parties to define and publish a technology taxonomy which will become a basis for automating and reporting on usage and compliance across cloud accounts and applications Cloud technologies are constantly evolving The role will seek out and identify beneficial new developments, working with the platform teams on behalf of the development community to ensure that technical debt is kept to a minimum, new capabilities are made available before and they are required by application teams, and the benefit of cloud-based development is subsequently maximised The criteria around the assessment of solutions architecture are currently unclear, requiring clarification and manual review The role will clearly define the 'big rules' for architecting such applications, and if required, define and own standards for cloud solutions architecture The process of delivering applications into cloud is overly complex The role will act as an advocate for the development community, providing consultation, documentation, and guidance on navigating the process and working to simplify and automate wherever possible Technical / job functional knowledge The following are critical functional requirements for the role: Substantial experience in cloud solutions architecture roles on at least one of the following cloud service providers: AWS, Azure, GCP Experience of on-premise architectures A good understanding of the benefits and the pitfalls of cloud architectures Experience in cloud engineering roles Proficiency in at least one mainstream programming language, such as java, golang, node. js, c#, python etc Experience of building proof-of-concept applications and environments A good understanding of the full development lifecycle and the importance of CICD and automation We are looking for intellectually curious people, passionate about the bigger picture of how technology industry is evolving, ready to ask difficult questions and deal with complicated scenarios.
