DevOps Engineer

As a provider of internal IT services for METRO GROUP, METRO SYSTEMS Romania provides specialized consulting to retail companies in all aspects of IT, develops specific solutions along the full value chain and provides a powerful IT infrastructure with a team of over 900 IT professionals.

Whether it is about asynchronous communication between services, simple Queueing system, stream processing or Big data integration, Apache Kafka is gaining momentum at Metro, so we, as engineers, are responsible for operating and scaling the multiple Kafka clusters to support increasingly diverse and demanding workloads. You will play a key role in the design, architecture, implementation and on-going support of Kafka infrastructure. You will build and integrate with other systems for provisioning, monitoring and alerting. Working closely with support and development teams, you will help deliver this project with a high level of automation and reliability.

Extensive knowledge of Linux operating systems
Automation and configuration management tools
Fundamentals about message queueing technologies
Troubleshooting in distributed systems
Feel at ease with scripting (Python or bash)
Ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly

Sharp analytical and problem-solving skills
CI/CD tools
Version controls systems (GIT)

We’re looking for someone to:

Create and maintain the Kafka Infrastructure on multiple clouds – public (Google Cloud Platform) and private (OpenStack)
Build and manage Kafka clusters and services by automating the tasks using Puppet and custom scripts
Continuously improve monitoring of key metrics for system health and performance using Datadog and Check_MK
Operate and tune Kafka brokers and Zookeeper
Perform day-to-day operational maintenance, support, and upgrades for the Kafka Clusters
Implement security policies for the fleet
Proactively catch and remediate problems, develop and implement solutions for improvement
Build tooling to troubleshoot systems more effectively
Share best practices and support development teams with consultancy for their particular use cases
Keep up-to-date with new tools and technologies relevant to the service
Create and update the technical documentation, write operational procedures
Incident/problem management support
