Food waste is a $1 trillion problem – costing the world over 1% of global GDP. We’re dead set on solving the problem and looking for people to help us achieve our mission. We, at Winnow, believe that food is far too valuable to waste, and that technology can transform the way we produce food. Our team is made of people who all share a passion for food and technology.

Winnow was founded in London in 2013 to help the hospitality industry prevent food waste through internet of things tools in the kitchen. We have worked with hundreds of sites and are operating in over 30 countries around the world supported by our offices in London, Dubai, Shanghai and Singapore. We are a rapidly growing company with a strong base of clients who are rolling out our system globally. We have blue-chip customers including Accor Hotels, IKEA, IHG, Marriott, Compass Group and many others.

Winnow’s clients on average reduce waste by over 50% by value and sustain savings. Winnow has now worked with hundreds of sites to reduce food waste, including hotels, universities and schools, staff restaurants, event/hospitality kitchens, buffets, pubs, and high street restaurants. Where the system is permanently adopted, pre-consumer waste value is reduced by 50% - 70% over 2 - 12 months, and maintained at these levels, with no detrimental impact to the perceived quality or value of the offer to their customers, and a net saving of staff time due to reduced food preparation and waste handling. This represents a typical improvement of food cost savings of 3% to 8%, commonly a 40%+ increase in profitability for restaurants. About the internship

Being an intern at Winnow isn’t about taking a back seat. Our interns are bright, motivated and integral members of the team. You’ll be getting involved at the heart of some of our key strategic projects and will have a voice which will be listened to.

As an Intern Developer, you’ll be using your innate coding talent and knowledge of computer programming languages. Our technology stack is constantly evolving as we pick the right tools for the job, but you should expect to be working with web, server and cloud technologies such as Java, Python, Angular JS, Node.js and MySQL(Postgres). We use an Agile process to manage our work flow, and you will work with the rest of the team to define and implement new tasks as they arise.

Depending on the projects we are focusing on at the time, you’ll gain a range of experiences while you are with us. You’ll get hands-on training and work with a mentor on a real strategic project. You could find yourself working with our Research Scientists, Scrum teams or product team. You may find yourself being challenged with developing in a language you’ve never used before or developing a new feature for the Winnow system.

About you

Driven and ambitious you will be excited about gaining experience in a rapidly growing start-up (and one of Wired’s top 100 start-ups in Europe) at what is truly the most exciting and dynamic points in time in our business. 

Your extraordinary attention to detail, and pride in what we’re creating, means your standards are always high. Things move quickly at Winnow so you’ll be able to work under pressure, get going of your own accord and use your initiative to get things done. You’ll be able to work at speed without compromising on accuracy and be able to work as part of a team. You’re also resilient, tenacious and open to feedback.

You’ll be in your penultimate year of study, expecting to graduate in 2020 and studying for a degree in Computer Science or any other relevant numerate and technical discipline. You’ll have exceptional programming skills and it’s looking pretty likely you’ll get at least a 2:1.

You will work alongside a driven team who are motivated by building an exciting business and leaving the world a better place than we found it.
