Joburi Medici fara frontiere - Medecins Sans Frontieres

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international medical humanitarian organisation founded by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. It provides independent, impartial assistance to people who are affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters or exclusion from healthcare. In 1999, MSF received the Nobel Peace Prize. Today MSF is a worldwide movement; we work in more than 70 countries around the world.

MSF’s work is based on humanitarian principles. We are committed to bringing quality medical care to those most in need, regardless of their race, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF operates independently of any political, military or religious agendas. At times, MSF may speak out publicly to bring a forgotten crisis to public attention, to alert the public to abuses occurring beyond the headlines, to criticise the inadequacies of aid systems, or to challenge the abuse of humanitarian aid for political interests.

In 2019, thanks to more than 39.000 locally hired staff and over 3.800 international professionals, more than 11 million patients were treated in MSF projects around the world!

Working with MSF. What to expect.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is constantly recruiting staff to carry out its projects. In addition to professional skills, the qualities needed to work with MSF include: being a good team player; being interested in other cultures; and being respectful of other people. It is also important to be flexible, as the context and working environment vary in each project and may be very different from what you are used to.

As an MSF staff member, you could find yourself working in a well-equipped hospital in a big city, in an improvised office set up in a tent in a refugee camp, or in a small health post in a remote and marginalised rural area.

The Austrian office of MSF recruits professionals from following countries: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, the Kosovo, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

We are looking for:

Non-medical profiles:
  • Technicians & logisticians: allrounders and specialists in construction, electricity, mechanics, water and sanitation, supply chain
  • Finance & HR specialists

Medical profiles:

  • Medical doctors:
  • generalists, paediatricians, anaesthetists, general & orthopaedic surgeons, obstetricians/gynaecologists, psychiatrists
  • Epidemiologists

  • clinical psychologists, psychotherapists
  • Pharmacists
  • Microbiologists

We expect:

  • Willingness to work in the spirit of the humanitarian principles of MSF
  • Willingness to work in conflict areas/unstable environments
  • Minimum two years relevant work experience or a completed medical specialisation
  • Commitment for two missions
  • Fluency in English and French or Spanish; Arabic is an asset
  • Experience in working or travelling abroad
  • Strong resilience to physical and psychological stress and strain
  • Ability to supervise and train others
  • Ability to work well in a team

We offer:

  • A fixed-term contract for the duration of your field assignment
  • A monthly salary and an international insurance package (covering health, disability, travel, accident and medical evacuation)
  • Payment of all mission-related expenses (transport, visas and accommodation)
  • Pre and post-mission health check-ups (including expenses for vaccinations)
  • An individual career within the organisation

Working with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), you will be stretched personally and professionally; you will have cultural exchanges with people from all over the world; and you will have an experience that is both rewarding and unique.

The recruitment process:

Please note that the recruitment process can take some time. Therefore, we recommend you to apply 3 to 6 months before your actual availability.

Get informed! On our website, you can find a lot of useful information regarding mission countries, current projects and requirements to work in the field with MSF. Other sources you might look into are our International Blog, Youtube, Facebook, or Twitter channel.

Getting in touch, participating in information session
As a next step, we cordially invite you to attend one of our information evenings or a webinars. Field experienced members of staff will tell you more about the goals and principles of Médecins Sans Frontières, living and working conditions in the field and the next steps towards your application.

What is your motivation? Which qualifications do you offer? How much time do you have for a first assignment? Do you have any questions? Take your time to self-assess your motivation and your skills.

Application form
At the end of the information evening or webinar, you will receive a link to our application website where you will find the application forms, which you send back to us with your documents. We will evaluate your application and in case you meet the necessary requirements, your application will be proceeded.

Test, Interview and Assessment Center
Non-medical candidates will be asked to take a test. The next steps are the Interview and the Assessment Center. The participation in a tropical medicine course for general practitioners, midwives and nurses is highly recommended, but not mandatory.

Preparation course
If the selection process turns out to be positive, participation in a preparation course will then be organized, depending upon availability. At the preparation course you will receive a general, practice-oriented view of the medical and non medical work of MSF.

After completing this course, we will inform you as soon as a suitable position has been found for you. As soon as you are in agreement with the offer the preparations for your departure (visa, vaccinations, etc.) can start.

Please note: Depending on your qualifications and the needs in the projects, finding a suitable position can sometimes take longer (up to several months!). Therefore, we recommend to apply 3 to 6 months before your actual availability. Vacancies for humanitarian aid cannot be thoroughly planned, and as such, your flexibility can often be put to the test already during preparation for a mission.

Briefing and Departure
Prior to departure you will get a briefing in one of the MSF Operational Centers (Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bruxelles, Geneva, Paris).

You are ready to start in the project!
